In 1014, the Battle of Clontarf was fought near Dublin. Brian Boru, who had become High King of Ireland in 1002, fought against an alliance of Gaelic and Norse-Irish contingents.
By this time, many monasteries had paved streets, while Dublin was the busiest trading centre on the island, trafficking not only slaves, but also goods like wine, silk, handicraft, precious stones. Cattle and slaves were the main item traded out of Ireland to get these goods.
Slavery became more widespread in the 11th century, with prisoners of war being sold into slavery along with people captured by slave-traders, both in Ireland and elsewhere.
